Richardson Recycles Station at Cottonwood Art Festival

Since 1969 the Cottonwood Art Festival has endeavored to maintain the perspective that "there's an art to having fun" at this semi-annual event in the City of Richardson. More than 300 volunteer slots are filled each May and October to assist with the creative stations in the ArtStop Children's Area.



This isn't a ticket taking role where you sit at a table for an entire shift. Rather, a paint splattering, mud throwing, glittered, and glued volunteer position that will leave you a little more colorful than when you arrived. While artistic skills are appreciated and put to good use, no experience is necessary other than patience, kindness, and a fondness for the next generation of artists. Must be at least 16 years of age, reliable, committed, and responsible for carrying out assigned duties.

FIBER ARTIST ELAINE UNZICKER TO MAKE SHIMMERING DEBUT IN RICHARDSON

It seems a little strange that a fiber artist works with metal, that each seam of a garment would be soldered together rather than stitched, and that wearing chains would be comfortable. But artists often march to the beat of their own drum, and the best ones can show the beauty to the rest of us. That is exactly what Elaine Unzicker does. Unzicker makes tops, dresses and accessories out of stainless steel chainmail. She prefers to call it metal lace. Although it may be tough as nails, her customers say it is surprisingly delicate and comfortable to wear. A 45-inch-long, one-inch wide scarf weighs only two ounces.

COTTONWOOD ART FESTIVAL SELECTS AMANDA BENNETT AS FEATURED ARTIST FOR FALL 2018




Birmingham, Alabama native Amanda Bennett is the featured artist of the Fall 2018 Cottonwood Art Festival in Richardson, Texas. Currently living and working in New Orleans by way of Nashville, Bennett’s deep South roots wind through her mixed media creations.

Without a doubt, her paintings have mid-twentieth century vibe, but with enough of a modern edge to remain timeless. Some of her works, such as Blow Me Away, are tongue-in-cheek, while others like El Ray Motel, leave one pining for simpler days when a weekend away didn’t have to be Instagram worthy.

RICHARDSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FLASHES AND SNARES AT COTTONWOOD ART FESTIVAL

Richardson Symphony Orchestra "Flash Mob" at Cottonwood Art Festival
Sunday, October 8, 2017 the Richardson Symphony Orchestra musicians, led by Maestro Clay Couturiaux, surprised art patrons at Cottonwood Art Festival with a melodious "flash mob."  Carrying instruments and wearing all black, the musicians nonchalantly walked into Cottonwood Park and one-by-one assembled into position.


Individuals browsing booths could suddenly hear the summoning of the snare and curiously followed the sound. There in the street everyone started to join the crowd that had formed a circle around the mysterious instrumentalists wearing dark shades and gazing at their sheet music.

The performance began with a single snare-drum relentlessly tapping out the introductory beats of Boléro by French composer Maurice Ravel. This one-movement piece originally premiered in 1928 in Paris and noted as Ravel's most famous composition. As each musician started to play the excitement of this impromptu artistic performance continued to build.

ARTIST CALL FOR COTTONWOOD ART FESTIVAL SPRING 2018

Cottonwood Art Festival Artist Check-In 
Cottonwood Art Festival is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2018 show scheduled for May 5-6 in the beautiful Cottonwood Park located in Richardson, Texas. The online form is available through ZAPP and the deadline to submit is January 12, 2018 at midnight and the non-refundable application fee is $30 per category.  Artist may submit up to two different applications and must include a photo of their booth set-up along with photos of the work to be exhibited.
