From music to art to a little bit of mud throwin’, there’s something for everyone at the City of Richardson’s Cottonwood Art Festival, to be held October 6-7, 2018 at Cottonwood Park in Richardson. A premier award-winning art show in North Texas, the event features live musical performances and ArtStop, a place for kids and families to let imaginations run wild and create mini-masterpieces.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer a full weekend line-up of family fun at Cottonwood,” said Serri Ayers, superintendent of community events for the City of Richardson.

“Set in scenic Cottonwood Park, we have top local musicians performing on two different stages and a hands-on area for children to experience the wonderful world of art.”

Decorated with colorful life-sized paint brushes, chalkboard easels and pottery wheels, ArtStop is the perfect place for a pint-sized Picasso to be creative. Staffed by more than 200 volunteers, children can decorate a sculpture hat, paint a canvas masterpiece, add to an enormous woven web or practice their hand at throwin’ mud and sculpting clay on a real potter’s wheel.

The two-day festival will also offer music in a variety of genres, including rock, country, jazz, blues, swing and folk. Performances will be held on both the Lakeside Courtyard Main Stage and Food Court Stage. Craft beer, wine and frozen margaritas will be available for purchase. Parking and admission are free.

Since 1969 the Cottonwood Art Festival has endeavored to maintain the perspective that "there's an art to having fun" at this semi-annual event in the City of Richardson. More than 300 volunteer slots are filled each May and October to assist with the creative stations in the ArtStop Children's Area.

This isn't a ticket taking role where you sit at a table for an entire shift. Rather, a paint splattering, mud throwing, glittered, and glued volunteer position that will leave you a little more colorful than when you arrived. While artistic skills are appreciated and put to good use, no experience is necessary other than patience, kindness, and a fondness for the next generation of artists. Must be at least 16 years of age, reliable, committed, and responsible for carrying out assigned duties.
It seems a little strange that a fiber artist works with
metal, that each seam of a garment would be soldered together rather than
stitched, and that wearing chains would be comfortable. But artists often march
to the beat of their own drum, and the best ones can show the beauty to the
rest of us. That is exactly what Elaine Unzicker does. Unzicker makes tops,
dresses and accessories out of stainless steel chainmail. She prefers to call
it metal lace. Although it may be tough as nails, her customers say it is
surprisingly delicate and comfortable to wear. A 45-inch-long, one-inch wide
scarf weighs only two ounces.

Sunday, October 8, 2017 the Richardson Symphony Orchestra musicians, led by Maestro Clay Couturiaux, surprised art patrons at Cottonwood Art Festival with a melodious "flash mob." Carrying instruments and wearing all black, the musicians nonchalantly walked into Cottonwood Park and one-by-one assembled into position.

Individuals browsing booths could suddenly hear the summoning of the snare and curiously followed the sound. There in the street everyone started to join the crowd that had formed a circle around the mysterious instrumentalists wearing dark shades and gazing at their sheet music.

The performance began with a single snare-drum relentlessly tapping out the introductory beats of Boléro by French composer Maurice Ravel. This one-movement piece originally premiered in 1928 in Paris and noted as Ravel's most famous composition. As each musician started to play the excitement of this impromptu artistic performance continued to build.
Approximately 240 artists will be invited to exhibit May 5-6, 2018 at Cottonwood Art Festival. Each artist is determined through a competitive jury process and scored by jury members on a scale of yes-no-maybe in the first round, creating a ranked group of artists in each category deemed qualified to advance to the second round. Scoring for the second round is on a 1 - 7 scale. A third and final round encourages discussion and then jurors have the choice of revising their scores and final scores are recorded. The top scorers in each category receive an invitation to the show. The jury dates are set for January 17-19, 2018.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">ArtStop is Cottonwood Art Festival's colorful and interactive children's area where kids are encouraged to get their hands dirty and explore their creative side! Staffed by more than 100 volunteers, ArtStop brings the world of art to life with gigantic paint brushes, chalkboard easels, pottery wheels and more. Most activities charge a modest fee and will include:

Crazy Cool Caps - Colorful, over-the-top hats using ribbons, glitter, feathers, pom-poms, foam shapes and more.

Throwin' Mud - Prepare to play in the mud (with an art apron) at this activity station guided by ArtStop's own master potters. Kids learn to throw a pot or vase on an electric potter's wheel and take home their art once it is dry and ready to go.

Canvas Classics - Prop a fresh canvas on an easel and turn carefree brush strokes with paint, into a glorious masterpiece.

Clay Play - Learn how to form polymer clay into colorful "straws." These straws are then cut and rolled into beads and other shapes to string a necklace or keychain.

Tile Treasures - Mosaics made from trinkets and tissue are as unique and creative as the children who make them and the tiles make wonderful keepsakes.

Wee Weavers - With fallen twigs gathered from the park, kids build a base to create their own unique weaving from colorful yarns and strings. Children add feathers or beads to personalize their creations. Donations of leftover yarn were collected from the City of Richardson employees to create this upcycled art project.

Rollin' and Recyclin'- The "Green Team" returns with creative ideas and artistic ways kids and families can recycle with common items we typically throw in the trash. The "Art from the Park" activity is free.

As a successful fine artist, Gregory Arth's work can be seen all over the world - from art galleries to movie theaters and from luxury shopping catalogs to amusement parks. Now as named featured artist of the City of Richardson's Cottonwood Art Festival, Arth's popular tree series and other selected paintings will be on display at the two-day prestigious art show in Cottonwood Park on October 7-8, 2017.

"It's very exciting to be named Featured Artist," said Gregory Arth. "Cottonwood was the first show I ever did, and it is the one that I've done the most. It's a beautiful setting and I'm honored to present at Cottonwood."

Arth has spent most of his adult life making a living with his talents as an artist. He began his career painting commercial and private murals, theatrical backdrops for ballet and opera companies, and set design and backdrops for the Six Flags Parks while in college.

Today, his murals, ceiling murals and trompe l'oeil work can be seen in some of the finest homes in Texas and around the world. Arth has been featured in a Neiman Marcus catalog for depicting underwater scenes on the bottom of swimming pools. The Cinemark Theater chain displays his mural work and canvas murals in their home office and their theaters around the country, South America and Asia. Arth has sold his works in oil, acrylic, and mixed media. They are seen in panels and canvas in numerous galleries, auctions, and fine art festivals across the country.

Arth's current work focuses on three main themes: the popular tree series, the circuit board and mixed media series, and traditional impressionistic style oil and acrylic paintings."I always try to evoke the emotion of happiness, humor, or comfort," said Arth. "I want people to feel good when they look at my stuff. For example, in the tree series, I'm inspired by the cool shade of a beautiful tree in the hot Texas sun."

Arth's work is about being accessible and fun, with a twist. "Growing up I played in the woods and now as an adult, my studio has many windows, and I look out at my trees all the time," said Arth. "If we lose our dreams and desires and wishes, we can find them again in a tree."

Arth's work will join hundreds of other museum-quality exhibits from around the country during the Cottonwood Art Festival. The two-day event will also include live musical performances, delectable dining options, and a creative children's area called ArtStop.

For many artists, small details can inspire big ideas. For Chris Vance, an Iowa-based abstract expressionist, big ideas take form as larger-than-life monsters, crazy characters and lively vistas. Named featured artist of the City of Richardson's Cottonwood Art Festival, Vance's vivid work will be on display May 6-7, 2017 in scenic Cottonwood Park.

A newcomer to North Texas' semi-annual prestigious art event, Vance is inspired by skateboard graphics, graffiti and children's art. His paintings celebrate the fundamentals of abstract expressionism: composition, balance, line and color.

"It's a huge honor to have my work highlighted at Cottonwood this year," said Chris Vance. "I'm excited to show festival-goers how my art has evolved and all of the tiny details that people don't initially notice."

As a graduate of Iowa State, Vance is influenced by other abstract expressionists, including Richard Diebenkorn. An avid skateboarder, Vance has turned his passion into fine art and now creates completely unique characters and quirky monsters.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Wound Up Café serves up thousands of cups of coffee each
year, leaving a dirt-like discard of used, water packed, finely ground, coffee
beans. As a community-minded citizen,
Jason reached out to Project Eden, one of three gardens partnered with
the City of Richardson. An average of
60-100 pounds of coffee grounds are regularly dumped into their organic compost
pile. Coffee grounds are close to pH
neutral (between 6.5-6.8 pH), they improve soil tilth, and help repel slugs and
snails in gardens.

the company. While this model is designed to carry about 200 lbs, Jason has
modified the vehicles suspension to hold more than 1,000 lbs of equipment and product
inventory. Unless the driver lightens
the load, it will likely not surpass a speed of 15 mph, which would otherwise
cruise at about 45 mph. The Wound Up
Café is transported distances on a trailer since it is not a registered motor
vehicle to be driven on the road.
